With 1,240 townships in Michigan double the number of cities, villages and counties combined, townships provide strong roots for Michigan’s citizens. The Michigan Association of Township Supervisors (MATS) was established in 1998 by a small group of township supervisors seeking a way to better network with each other and to ensure their educational needs were met. They were seeking ways to strengthen the quality of municipal government and administration in Michigan’s rural communities. While the association has grown in numbers and importance, that mission continues to hold strong.

Why do Supervisors need MATS if the township is already a member of Michigan Townships Association (MTA)? It’s not a question of one association or the other. Both associations provide valuable resources to Michigan’s townships. MTA serves the needs of your whole township as a form of government. MATS is the professional service, education and networking association specifically for Township Supervisors. Every profession needs specialized resources, in depth education, networking with peers and experienced mentors to help its members improve their skills and gain the knowledge they need to succeed. MATS is that organization for you.

Why Join?

Every profession has an association that facilitates networking and continuing education for its members.

You have chosen to serve your community as its top elected official - the township supervisor. You made the commitment to serve to the best of your ability, to be as professional as possible. You are required to make decisions on many complex issues about which you previously had no knowledge. There's a steep learning curve when you're new to local government, and MATS strives to keep your wheels on the road and headed in the right direction.

Through education sessions targeted specifically to meet the in-depth needs of Township Supervisors, MATS provides you with the information you need to make knowledgeable decisions on behalf of your constituents. MATS sessions are attended only by Supervisors, so you can learn and ask tough questions in a "safe" environment.

In addition, the ability to join dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of other supervisors from all over Michigan in conversations about what works and what doesn't will save you immeasurable time and eliminate frustration as you face the daily challenges of managing operations in your township. Many of our members rate the networking at conferences as the best value of membership.
