About Us

With 1,240 townships in Michigan - double the number of cities, villages and counties combined - townships provide strong roots for Michigan’s citizens. The Michigan Association of Township Supervisors (MATS) was established in 1998 by a small group of township supervisors seeking a way to better network with each other and to ensure their educational needs were met. They were seeking ways to strengthen the quality of municipal government and administration in Michigan’s rural communities. While the association has grown in numbers and importance, that mission continues to hold strong.

MATS is the professional service, education and networking association specifically for township supervisors. Every profession needs specialized resources, in-depth education, networking with peers and experienced mentors to help its members improve their skills and gain the knowledge they need to succeed. MATS is that organization for you.

MATS is moving forward in its charge to better meet the needs of professional township supervisors. We invite you to join us.
